When weather or terrain demands it, the system automatically redistributes power up to 50/50 front/rear for enhanced traction. Under normal driving conditions, the system directs 100 per cent of torque to the front wheels to maximize efficiency. Like the Hybrid, the RAV4 Prime uses an electronic on-demand all-wheel-drive system featuring a dedicated electric motor at each wheel to channel torque where it’s needed. The setup delivers 302 net system horsepower, a range of up to 979 km on a full tank of gas and a full battery charge, and an electric-only driving range of up to 68 km. The RAV4 Prime is powered by a 2.5L four-cylinder paired with dual electric motors. For 2023, the entire RAV4 lineup is enhanced with standard Safety Sense 2.5 and the Toyota Multimedia connectivity system. Toyota’s most popular-selling crossover comes in no less than 16 trim levels, and a choice of three AWD powertrains - gas, hybrid and the Prime plug-in hybrid - pretty much ensuring buyers there’s a model that will meet their needs.
